Generator Goat Pasture Seed Mixes:

Recently there has been interest in suitable pasture seed mix’s for milking goats and to lesser degree goats for fibre production.

Although, to date, there has been very little work on finding suitable pasture seed mixes ,specific to goats, we believe below mentioned blend’s will work well for your goats. These basic suggested mix’s can be further enhanced with the addition of some of the suggested “extras”.

Within these three mixes there will be one suitable for your farm regardless of your location within New Zealand.

Generator ‘General Purpose’ Goat Pasture Seed Mix
The Mix: Cultivar Description Use for:
AR1 Ultra Perennial ryegrass New release from Cropmark seeds. High dry matter production, Late flowering (+20days) strong cool season growth. Inter species – cross New Zealand bred. . A goat specific pasture seed blend. This has been created for South Island and North Island regions without black beetle.

(We recommend the use of Poncho Seed Treatment for seedling Insect protection)

Redefine Cocksfoot High dry matter yield, increased palatability and is less invasive
Savvy Cocksfoot Athos is a modern cocksfoot with a soft and palatable leaf. It has high annual production and cool-season growth.
Timothy High summer feed value
Fog grass Fog grass contains flavonoids and tannins both have been shown to improve stock health when used for stock grazing
Plantain A fibrous broadleaf mineral pasture herb.
Recommended sowing @ 21 kgs per hectare / or more with options

Generator non rye goat pasture seed mix
The Mix: Cultivar Description Use for:
Atom Brome Grass Tall Fescue is a perennial grass more tolerant of hot summer, poorly drained soils than perennial ryegrass. A goat specific pasture seed blend. Contains no ryegrass or clovers. The grasses used have no harmful endophyte within them.
Suitable as a new pasture or to renovate existing poor performing pastures

Generator Extras for the Goat Pasture Seed Mixes
The Seed: Seed Description: Recommended use rate:
Cocksfoot Cocksfoot is a very persistent perennial grass that tolerates summer dry conditions, moderate soil fertility, insect attack and continual set stocking. 2 to 4 kgs per hectare
Chicory Chicory has a deep, tap like, rooting system, and provides excellent stock health attributes and summer performance. 1 to 2 kgs per hectare
Plantain A fibrous broadleaf mineral rich pasture herb. 500 grams to 1 kg per hectare
Red Clover A tap rooted clover with very high feed value, with excellent summer production. 2 to 5 kgs per hectare
Timothy Very palatable to all stock types care must be taken to avoid over grazing. Has very high herbage quality features. 2 to 3 kgs per hectare
Phalaris Phalaris grows with vigour during the Autumn, Winter and Spring but is semi – dormant during the Summer. 1 to 2 kgs per hectare
Persian Clover Persian Clover is a highly productive, palatable and nutritious annual clover. Recommended cultivars:
