Issue 81 / Summer / December 2016

Hi [firstname]

Thanks for taking time to read the December SeedData newsletter.

I trust this newsletter finds you all well and looking forward to some great family time during the upcoming festive season.

It's always at this time of the year, I start to question where this year has gone? I'm sure many of you are the same.

I often think that if your year goes past you in a blink of an eye, then you must be enjoying yourself at work and play so I suppose that's a good thing.

As I write this newsletter I've been talking to many of my local clients who have just received between 40-50 mms of rain.

I was once told by a wise farmer that a rain a week before Christmas, is a pretty good Christmas present to receive. From a local (Canterbury) point of view that's always true.

I also realise many of our clients have had enough rain to last them for a while with many recording significantly higher than normal rainfall this spring.

In this newsletter, we wish you a very merry Christmas, we talk about some cheaper sow down options for the coming Autumn, and we look at a couple of new chemicals that I think will be useful.

Please browse these topics below:

Merry Christmas to all!

Low cost, high quality Autumn sow down options.

This coming Autumn is set to be another busy one for seed companies for a couple of reasons.

These include:
  • A lot higher rainfall in some areas which no doubt has led to more than normal pasture damage,
  • A lot of pasture renovation was deferred last autumn,
  • And a far better outlook for our dairy farmer clients when compared to this time last year.

Specialty Seeds think that a lot of our clients will be doing so much that if we can provide a high quality low cost blend it will be well supported.

Over the last few weeks we have been talking to several suppliers about coming on board with us to achieve this goal for our clients.

Many of our clients have already had the benefit of us using our buying power to achieve a good deal for them and this coming Autumn will be no different.

As I write this newsletter things are coming together very well and during the next couple of newsletters.

I'll keep you up to date with developments... watch this space!!!

Right match of seed to soil
New chemicals look promising.

22 years ago, when we started up in business both David and myself decided that we would not get involved in the agricultural chemical scene to allow us to focus on our core business; grain and seed.

However since the re-birth of fodder beet, we do advise our clients on a robust weed, insect, and disease control program as part of our complete fodder beet package.

Because of this we get to see most of the latest news from different chemical companies and so I thought I would share these two new products that recently came to my attention.

Dynamo Herbicide - Weed control for pastures containing plantain.

Dynamo Label - Click here for more information Weed control in new pastures is normally quite a difficult subject.

To make it harder, over the last 10-15 years this has been made even more difficult due to the addition on pasture herbs into the pasture seed mix.

The commonly used herb, Plantain, has made it particularly difficult to achieve good weed control when the plantain is young, so it was great to see the latest registration come through for Dynamo from Zelam.

The range of weeds controlled by Dynamo is extensive and includes several of the difficult to control weeds including black nightshade, storksbill and wireweed.

Like a lot of the newer chemistry Dynamo should be applied early to your new pasture to achieve the best results.

Once your new clover has its second true trifoliate leaf you are good to go.

Mondo Fungicide - Disease control in fodder beet
Mondo Label - Click here for more information
To date there has been rapid growth in the use of fodder beet as a source of cheap and high quality winter stock food.

Weed control has always been recognised as a fundamental key for success when growing fodder beet and to date disease issues haven't been that major.

However, I think there are several factors that will change this they include New Zealand's temperate climate that allows fungi to grow well once established, the large increase in fodder area and the wide use of 2nd and 3rd year cropping of fodder beet.

These and other contributing factors I believe will mean our “honeymoon” period maybe over so it's great to see two new products that have gained registration for disease control in fodder beet. The four main fodder beet diseases are, Rust, Powdery Mildew, Leaf spot ramularia and Cercospora.

The two new fungicides are Mondo from Zelam and Rivera from Adria. The chemistry in both chemicals are similar to each other and trial work in New Zealand has shown they can boost yields of fodder beet significantly. This yield improvement not only came from much improved protection of the leaf (which can account for 10-13% of your fodder beet crops yield) but also improvement in bulb size was shown.

In my opinion Mondo and Rivera should only be used once canopy closer has occurred with a follow up 15-21 days after the first application which should be made at the first sign of the disease. With both Mondo and Rivera there is a 42 day withholding period.

Below is a link to the Mondo information however as Rivera is so new, please contact us for further information.
