Issue 57 / Spring / November 2014

Hi #subname#

Welcome to the November edition of Specialty Seed's SeedData Newsletter.

Although we are technically still in Spring the weather has certainly been hard to predict this last month. It seems to swing between Winter and Summer often on the same day! Late last month I attended the New Zealand Grain and Seed Trade Associations (NZGSTA) annual conference held in Dunedin and drove through snow on my way home.

Apart from attending the AGM and watching the Haggis being addressed, Dunedin was certainly was a fitting place to hold the conference. The current NZGSTA could trace its roots back to Dunedin when in 1895 an agreement between Dunedin and Invercargill seed merchants was reached to only sell seed under certain conditions. These conditions were designed to help protect both seller and buyer, the start of the current NZGSTA.

Specialty Seeds have been a member of the NZGSTA for many years now. I normally attend the yearly conference as it not only gives you a chance to see some great places New Zealand has to offer but also you get to meet face to face with people you deal with throughout the year.

I can tell you there is a tremendous amount of work that goes on behind the scene on issues relating to either the import, export or domestic sale of seed in New Zealand. The NZGSTA is normally at the fore with these issues. Click here for more info on the NZGSTA. This month's issue we look at our two new seed protection products and inform you of a field day being held in Ranfurly towards the end of the month.

This month we will cover the following topics:

New Seedling protection products

Specialty Seeds have for several years had the desire to offer our clients what we consider to be the best pasture and brassica seedling protection products.

We have recently started to market the following new products:
  • Pest Go brassica seedling protection
  • Pest Go pasture seedling protection
Currently these products offer the respective establishing seedlings protection from the most significant and commonly occurring pasture pests we experience at establishment as well as anti-dust and easy flow product to make seed drilling safer on the environment and for an easier flow through your drills.

We are also keeping a very close eye on some of the new seed treatment technology products that are popping up. Until now I have regarded some of these products as "snake oil" however technology changes and some of the good science we see coming through is indicating to us that there may well be merit in the use of some of them.

We will be trialling one of these new products this coming season on the back of the early information we have had presented to us which indicates significant advantages in both germination and seedling vigour.

We will keep you posted on the results. Until then if you have any questions on or new seed treatment products please contact us.

Ranfurly field day

Perendale NZ One of the perks of my job is the fact I get to see a lot of very interesting farms and rub shoulders with some very good farmers.

I have been involved with the following clients for a relatively short period of time but I knew the minute I started dealing with them that they were special farmers, getting the most out of a special property near Ranfurly.

It came as no surprise to me when I heard they had won the 2014 Sir Geoffrey Peren award, issued by Perendale NZ.

Adam Lyndsey, his partner Jules and Adam's mother Karen Lyndsey, originally farmed in Central Southland and moved to their new 2000 hectare farm in 2011.

Since then the farm has under gone massive growth and the field day will explain these changes. I know it's going to be an interesting day and urge your attendance especially if you want to be inspired by what hard but also clever work can achieve in a relatively short time.

Run by: Perendale NZ in association with ASB bank
When: Thursday, 27th November 2014, 1pm
Where: Creekside Farm woolshed, Clunie Road, Kyeburn. Note: Creekside Farm woodlshed is sign posted from 9174 Kyeburn - Ranfurly Road, Ranfurly. See this location on Google maps)

I look forward to seeing you there, for more information please contact us.
