Issue 83 / Autumn / March 2017

Hi [firstname]

Welcome to the March edition of the SeedData newsletter..

All of a sudden, we have moved into Autumn, with the days getting a bit shorter and cooler. I don't know how you feel but it kind of snuck up on me.

The recent rains, or deludes as in some cases have been a great relief to some and caused difficulties to many others. This season definitely appears to have been a season of two halves, either very dry or very wet.

I saw recently that some farmers on the West Coast have had 2 metres more rain than is the normal during the Summer! This must have made it very difficult for them and hopefully the approaching Winter will be a kind one.

In this month's newsletter, we look at our Enrich Persian clover and the Graze n Hay mixes we use with it, talk about an exciting new joint promotion we are involved with.

Please browse these topics below:

Enrich Persian clover.

During the last few years we have marketed our Enrich Persian annual clover with very good results.

However, seed production has always been an issue. Over the last three to four years, we have discovered what we hope is the key to achieving a good seed yield results. It is now at the stage where we can start promoting this cultivar with more confidence in regards to seed supply.

Here is some interesting information about Persian annual clovers:
  • Persian clovers get their name and originate from countries that include Turkey, Iran and Iraq and do well in a wide range of conditions.
  • They are widely used throughout the world and use of them has become more common in New Zealand.
  • They can be used as either a special purpose forage crop or used in pasture seed mixes with annual or Italian ryegrasses, cereals or brassicas as a self-regenerating and highly nutricious plant.
  • Persian annual clovers are high in protein, are nitrogen fixing and have a water foraging tap root and like most legumes are the power house of farm pastures.
Enrich Persian clover has a late flowering trait. It is much later than most other cultivars of Persian clover.

This trait was the No. 1 problem for seed production, however, from a pastoral production point of view, means Enrich retains its leaf quality longer into the Spring. This is obviously important as clients are commonly using Enrich in mixes with silage grasses and whole crop cereal silage.

Enrich is also a most useful addition to any pasture seed mix (sow at 3-5kgs per hectare).

Graze n Hay pasture mixes.

As much as I hate to admit it, our Graze n Hay blends came about after I studied their use on farms in Australia, where similar blends are extensively used.

We currently have two Graze n Hay seed mixes:
  • One using annual ryegrass mixed with Enrich Persian clover. This blend we call simply Graze n Hay blend.
  • Our other Graze n Hay seed mix uses a diploid Italian ryegrass mixed with Enrich Persian clover. This blend we call Graze N Hay Premium blend.

As mentioned these blends are used extensively throughout Australia where clients are looking for a crop to sow after their whole crop cereal silage crop, Summer brassica program or following a maize crop.

Drilled at 20kgs per hectare, these blends provide a fast establishing high quality feed source. The seed mix is normally Winter grazed and then used as a silage crop, prior to the paddocks being sown into the Spring or Summer program.

We suggest the use of the Graze n Hay blend were you are going into a Spring sow down program, as normally, by the end of October the annual ryegrass starts to run out of steam.

If you are going into a Summer sow down program (Summer turnips, pasja, chicory etc) or you have irrigation, we suggest the use of the Graze n Hay premium as the diploid Italian ryegrass persists for longer and retains its leaf quality longer into the Spring than an annual ryegrass will.

Graze n Hay blend comes mixed with our Devour annual ryegrass, however should you wish to use your favourite annual ryegrass, we are only too happy to use it as well; other commonly used annuals include Hogan, Jivet, Progrow, Tama, Winter Star and Zoom.

Graze n Hay premium comes with Kano Italian ryegrass, however once again should you have a preferred Italian we would be happy to make the mix up using it; other popular diploid Italians include: Accelerate, Aber Niche, Asset, Lush, Mona, Tabu and Supercruise
