Issue 65 / Winter / July 2015

Hi #subname#

Welcome to the July edition of Specialty Seed's SeedData Newsletter.

By the time you receive this I'll be huffing and puffing riding my bike along the roads and trails of Kyrgyzstan. Most of the huffing and puffing will be because for most of the time I will be above 2500 metres about sea level!

However one thing I will not miss is the cold winter starts. Before I took off Pukaki recorded a minus 19 degree day. To put this into context that temperature was lower than if you were standing on the summit of Mt Everest!!!

One certainly hopes that weather as cold as that will indeed kill a few bugs. Most farmers I've been talking to are welcoming these conditions and are recording good pasture growth. Hopefully we are in for a mild winter?

In this months newsletter we will update you on some new fodder beet cultivars, look at dairy farm production costs and a most worthy aid for farmers and the farming community, Farmstrong. In this edition I'd like to talk about fodder beet seed supply, a great deal for maize growers and how to care for your Lucerne over winter.

Apology for the June SeedData newsletter issues

Specialty Seeds would like to offer our apologies to all the people we confused in last month's June SeedData newsletter.

In the June newsletter we showed off the brand new Specialty Seeds website.

Unfortunately because it was so new all the June newsletter links to it didn't work! This issue occurred despite the fact that when we did the test newsletter send, as we do for every edition, it worked. I sometimes think computers are having a laugh!

If you would like to have a look at the June SeedData Newsletter, or any other newsletters we have sent out in the past please check out the SeedData Newsletter Back issues website page.

Fodder beet cultivar update

Here are two new fodder beet cultivars that will be released onto the market this season. We will have stocks of all three of these cultivars however as they are new ones, stocks will be limited, so get in contact with Specialty Seeds early if you are interested.

Geronimo fodderbeet:

Geronimo has a medium to high dry matter yield coming in at 17%. It has very good mildew and Ramularia tolerance and is claimed to be rhizomania resistant. Because of this excellent disease resistance, Geronimo claims to have very good top leaf growth. Geronimo has 45 to 50% of its growth above the ground and is suitable for all stock types.

Last season there was a small trial lot of Geronimo released onto the market. Initial results from this trial lot have been very encouraging and this season we will see more of this cultivar released onto the market.

Fodder beet Robbos fodderbeet:

Robbos is a relatively new cultivar on the market and has a clean yellow root with medium to high dry matter of between 17 and 19%.

This makes it very good for both dairy and beef production systems although I think time will prove it to be suitable for any New Zealand farming system. Like many of the newer cultivars they are suitable for grazing in situ or lifting, Robbos has between 50 to 60% of its growth below the ground.

Robbos has undergone a thorough trial program in New Zealand and its excellent all round performance ensured it's release this season.

Dairy Farming production costs

Lucerne paddock I'm not going to dwell on the fact that the coming season for dairy farmers is going to be different from the last few year's seasons.

Farmers coming into it will be looking very closely at every dollar they spend to make sure that money spent is spent wisely.

The pressure will be on to identify costs and ensure they will have a real impact on the bottom line.

I recently read the following article written by Graham Kerr from New Zealand Agriseeds which raises some interest points of interest for our clients to consider... I thought I'd share it with you:

Farmstrong - Live well, Farm well

We at Specialty Seeds are very safety conscious in our workplace. We are also always keen to promote anything that will make our client's workplace safer as well.

You may remember during 2013 we had a farm safety tip in every monthly Seedata newsletter. Recently we have been made aware of an excellent program called Farmstrong.

Farmstrong is an innovative program aimed to advise farmers of issues surrounding mental health and provides tips on their wellbeing. I know how well farmers can be looking after their stock and farm while not spending much consideration to their own health.

By following the links below you can see these wellbeing health tips explained extremely well. At the same time you can sign up to be sent regular updates and reminders of issues to help ensure your good health, after all said and done what else really matters.

Farmstrong
Corson Maize Early Order Campaign extension
Corson Maize Early Order campaign

In the May SeedData Newsletter we informed you of a cracker of a deal from Corson Maize. The tagline goes a little like this:

Improve your cashflow by ordering Corson maize seed and don’t pay a cent until Autumn 2016, plus benefit from a 100% replant policy*.

As you have been made aware above, we have been informed that the Corson Maize Seed Early Order Campaign end date has been pushed out to the 31st of July 2015.

This campaign extension is to cater for the late grain harvest occurring in the North Island. It is also due to the current uncertainties being experienced in the dairy sector.

Remember that ordering early ensures that you will be more likely to receive the hybrid of your choice.

Please get in touch with us if you have any questions.
