Issue 47 / Summer / January 2014

Hi #subname#

Welcome to the first edition of the Specialty Seed's SeedData Newsletter for 2014.

I suppose life is all about swings and roundabouts, during the New Year's break many of my city friends complained about the cool damp weather and how it affected their summer holiday.

I of course was sympathetic to a degree but also realised how important the rain was for most of our farming clients.

And I also reminded many of my city mates that last year we had the opposite of course they had good weather and for many farmers it was the start of a drought many of them would prefer to forget... swings and roundabouts.

In this month's newsletter we look at the start of our new building, talk about a new range of mixes for our milking goat farmers, Bayer's new seed treatment incentive "Bayer SeedGrowth™" and new red clover's coming onto the market. In this month's Seedata newsletter we will look at the following topics:

Specialty Seeds are moving at the end of March!

Specialty Seed's are pleased to announce that we will be relocating our business into the Izone Industrial Park in Rolleston, 15 kilometres south of Christchurch, sometime at the end of March.

The new building will be a standalone warehouse 150% of the size of our current building which over the last two years in particular has grown too small.

It's a big investment for us, however we felt it was essential so that we were able to keep up the high level of service that we and our clients that demand.

As well as significantly improving on our current floor space we will also double our seed mixing and seed treatment output with the addition of new machinery.

The site is currently under construction and we will keep you up to date as the story develops.

New Goat Milking pasture seed mixes

Milking Goats
Over the last few years there has been massive growth in the demand for milk products produced by Goats.

This demand has been brought about for many reasons.

Goats milk:
  • includes different allergenic burden compared to cow milk
  • proteins are digested more completely than cow milk proteins
  • contains more calcium and phosphate than cow's milk
  • makes for some mighty fine cheeses, my favourite being goats milk Feta!

The goat milk industry is currently actively seeking new farmers to sign up with and the future looks bright.

For this reason we talked to farmers and did some research on providing a range of suitable pasture seed mixes in support of the goat milk industry. To see these mixes please go to the Goats pasture seed mixes website page on the Specialty Seeds website, click here to contact us.

Bayer SeedGrowth - seed treatments

Ever since Specialty Seeds New Zealand's inception it has been members of the Bayer NZ ASTT (Advanced seed treatment technology) club. This was a club set up by Bayer to promote advances in their seed - applied products, for us Poncho and Gaucho.

We see Bayer New Zealand as a very important business partner and seed treatments on seed as a growing way of applying chemicals.

Bayer SeedGrowth Now the ASTT club has been replaced with the new and worldwide Bayer SeedGrowth™ business that covers four complete areas Services, Coatings, Products and Equipment.

The advantage to you, is that we have a "One Stop" shop for advice, products and equipment for the future growth of seed treatment products.

Bayer have been involved in seed treatment products for nearly 100 years and are continuously improving in all areas with a wide range of new seed treatment products in the pipeline.

New Red Clover releases

This season will see the release of two new red clovers onto the market they are: Grasslands Relish and Malbec

Grasslands Relish red clover

Grasslands Relish is a new cultivar developed to challenge the theory that red clovers are only a short lived pasture plant.

Developed over 10 years Grasslands Relish in trials has been shown to outperform many of the currently available cultivars in terms of both dry matter production and persistency. In trials Grasslands Relish had a massive 60% greater persistency than the second best contender. Grasslands Relish will be available ex harvest 2014 so hopefully by the end of February we may see some coming on stream.

For a look at some of the trial results on Grasslands Relish please download the link below or contact Specialty Seeds.

Malbec Red Clover

Malbec has been used in the North Island for a couple of seasons where farmers have found it to be very useful in new pastures, hay and silage paddocks.

Malbec has very good mid to late Winter - Spring growth which as you all know is a very important, some would say critical, time for farmers. Also Malbec Red clover can offer support for higher-yielding ryegrass pastures and survives well in dry conditions.

Malbec has an upright growth habit, large leaf size and low oestrogen levels making it suitable to use for all stock types.

Seed is available now and please feel free to contact us if you have any questions on Malbec We will also need to put these onto the web site as a new product in the red clover section
