Issue 42 / Winter / August 2013

Hi #subname#

Welcome to the August edition of the Specialty Seed SeedData Newsletter.
Download a the ACC Kids Farm Safety Activity Book PDF
Last month I spent quite a bit of time walking around different companies, research farms and out in the field inspecting field trials largely made up of a lot of the newer cultivars due to be released in the next year or two. Although you are only looking at these cultivars at one time of the year its good see the differences in them.

In general I observed that the plant breeders are focusing on later flowering types of grasses that offer not only better spring / autumn production but are also producing improved winter growth as well. I also attended a very well run seminar held by DLF on Fodder beet. If you are going to grow Fodder beet this season you should take time out to look at the information that was presented.

As we are starting to come into our busy time there is a lot to look at and in this month's edition we will look at some market updates, Ansa AR1 New Zealand bred perennial ryegrass, Monty a new silage barley option, Fodderbeet seminar information.

Also thanks' goes out to Nick George from Orion crop protection for providing us with some useful tips on how to achieve the best results when spraying out paddocks with Glyphospate before drilling them into spring pasture / crops.

In this months newsletter we will look at:

Growing fodder beet this season?

Recently DLF seeds held a series of fodder beet seminars throughout New Zealand to present the finds of their extensive trial program contacted this last fodder beet growing season.

If you are considering growing fodder beet this season take the time to have a quick look at the information provided at these seminars. It covers most the information you will need to help make your key decisions before growing your fodder beet crop this season.

Subjects including total yield results, plant establishment and feed quality plus much more. To view the seminar information please click here, or for more information on growing fodder beet please contact Specialty Seeds.

To see the beet cultivars available for 2013 please see the list below:

Fodder beet cultivars

SF Brigadier Low Dry Matter Type (more root above the soil - 65%)
Enabling easy access to the crop when strip feeding. This is a better option for grazing and it is a softer bite, which is more suitable for feeding younger stock.

DLF Feldherr Low Dry Matter Type (more root above the soil - 50%)
Feldherr is a high-yielding fodder beet with a light orange bulb colour. It has a low bulb drymatter percentage (12-15 %DM), which some farmers prefer for grazing, especially with animals breaking new teeth, or older animals with fewer teeth, and species such as deer.

Clean Crop Brassica price drop

Following increased interest in this Clean Crop Brassica technology PGG Wrightsons have announced two major changes. These are:
  1. A big drop in the cost per hectare of the HT Rape from $275.00 + GST per hectare to $225.00 + GST per hectare. This should put this product back on the radar as clearly you can see the advantages from the below picture

  2. Also following market demand PGG Wrightsons have a "Ridging Pack" for the Swede growers. The new 1 hectare pack selling at $190.00 per hectare includes 700 grams HT Swede plus Telar.

I predict that all products across the whole clean crop range will be selling very well this season after the success it had last year. It may pay to order earlier than later this season.

To order your new season's seed or for more information please contact Specialty Seeds.

Barrier Combo (with U2 Endophyte) available as bare seed

Cropmark Seeds have announced that they will be in a position to supply their ready-to-use Barrier Combo perennial pasture pre-mix (containing U2 endophyte) as a "bare seed" option this Spring.

The bare seed option should be of particular interest to our organic farmers who by using Barrier Combo will have the answer to the problem of insect attack from underground.

Cropmark have also lowered the recommended sowing rate from 25 kgs to between 22-25 kgs per hectare. These two changes are great positive moves as it will lower the cost per hectare.

Please note that stock of Barrier combo will be limited so we recommend you get on early to avoid disappointment.

To order your new seasons seed or for more information please contact Specialty Seeds.

New Products (Perennial ryegrass & Silage Barley)

  • Ansa AR1 Perennial ryegrass
As mentioned I spent some time looking around at some new cultivars recently and one that showed up well was the new diploid perennial ryegrass Ansa AR 1 released from DLF Seeds.

Ansa is one of the first diploid cultivars released from DLF New Zealand breeding program, therefore well suited to New Zealand's specific climate and seasonal needs. Ansa AR1 shows very good year round production particularly its winter growth when it out yielded 10 of the 11 cultivars it was tested against.

Ansa AR1 has a +14 day heading date and is suitable for all stock classes and is recommended for use in medium to high rainfall areas or under irrigation.

  • Monty Silage barley
Agricom have just announced the release of their new barley called Monty. Monty is specifically breed as a whole crop silage barley type and is unique in that it's the first "naked barley" that I can remember released as specific silage barley.

Monty has compressed and vastly reduced awns which can minimise the damage conventional spikey awns can do to sensitive mouth skins, reducing animal stress. Other key features of Monty are excellent tolerance to most leaf diseases, high silage quality and most importantly superior straw strength. Monty will be available in limited supply this coming season.

Getting the Most Out Of Your Glyphosate

Click here to download the 'Getting the most out of your Glyphosate' brochure As we enter Spring 2013 glyphosate prices keep on climbing making the efficient use of glyphosate an important topic.

Whatever crop or pasture you plan on sowing this spring you will more than likely require a spray-out beforehand to kill undesirable grasses and broadleaf weeds.

This will also help with soil moisture conservation and assist plant establishment after sowing by reducing weed competition. Chemical weed control with glyphosate will also help reduce the need for excessive cultivation...
