Hi #subname#

Welcome to the August edition of Specialty Seed's SeedData Newsletter.

I have just come back from a sales trip in the North Island and I'm happy to say the country side is looking good in general. It is also good to see the early tell tale of spring, hyper busy farmers, slightly longer days and buds on the trees, with all the rain most areas have enjoyed it looks like we could be in for a good spring. After last autumn we need it fingers crossed.

In this edition we will preview:

Whole Crop Cereal Silage

As you will have read above it appears spring is on the way, therefore if you are considering a crop of Whole Crop Cereal Silage you will need to think about using either Triticale or Barley.
Crackerjack Triticale
If you are considering Triticale then the best cultivar for this at this time of year is called Crackerjack. Crackerjack is a New Zealand bred cultivar with improved disease resistance, high yield potential and good lodging resistance. Another benefit of Crackerjack Triticale is the long harvest "window of opportunity" it has when compared to other crops. Contact us for more information on Crackerjack Triticale.

Another commonly used spring silage crop is Barley. Quick and simple to grow Barley can provide a high yield of top quality silage as it has a very high proportion of grain yield and a low straw yield compared to some other cereals. Spring sown Barley is quick to grow and is harvested earlier than other whole crop cereal silage options. This speed to harvest allows you to get your paddocks back into production quicker. There is a wide range of Barley cultivars to select from. If you would like information on what Barley cultivar suits your region the best please click here to contact us.

Brassica
Brassica
We are starting to field a lot of questions from clients on what Summer Brassica is going to suit their needs best. The three main crops that you can use over the summer are: Summer Turnips, Rape or Forage Brassica. The things you need to consider are stock type, when the feed is required and the location. For example, if you are on light soil types you may be better to consider a Rape or Forage Brassica over Summer Turnips as both those crops have the ability to put down deeper rooting systems.

There have been several new brassica's released on the market recently and we would be only to happy to discuss the benefits of them and your requirements, please click here to contact us.

Fodderbeet

Fodderbeet Fodderbeet is one of the highest yielding forage options available to farmers. Fodderbeet is a long growing-season crop which requires a high level of care in establishment but as it is not a brassica it is not as susceptible to the diseases that brassica is and once established is highly palatable to animals. The following varieties of Fodderbeet are available this season:

Cultivars: SF Brigadier, SF Blaze, Rivage, Monro, Kyros.

You should be considering placing your Fodderbeet seed order now to ensure supply.

Latest News

Chemical Resistant Brassica:
Come the middle of this month both Chris and I will attend an afternoon meeting to gain our accreditation to be able to sell, to our clients, the new range of chemical resistant brassica's that will shortly be released into the market. This range of brassica's has been selected from plants in paddocks that have shown resistance to a particular range of chemicals. Over the years these chemical resistant plants have gone through a further selection process and are now at the point that they are due for commercial release. We will have more details for you in the next edition of the SeedData ENewsletter.

Maize Maize:
Specialty Seeds have recently signed up to become a 'Growth Partner' with Pacific Seeds New Zealand Ltd in an effort to better service our many North Island, and growing South Island, client base with their maize seed requirements. We believe that Pacific Seeds NZ Ltd have a well proven and growing range of excellent silage / grain maize cultivars and with some recent alliances they have formed this range is set to expand. We have updated the Sorghum and Maize information on our website and look forward to any enquiries you may have.

Chemical Update: Granstar®:
Granstar® when used for conservation tillage has had three significant changes to its label in a recent review of its Label by DuPont™ they are:
  • DO NOT sow brassica species into DuPont™ Granstar® herbicide treated areas if the soil pH exceeds 6.5. Note: pH is a measure of acidity. A pH value below 7 indicates an acid soil, a pH value above 7 indicates an alkaline soil. Tolerance of other crops (grown through to maturity) should be determined on a small scale before sowing into larger areas.
  • DO NOT apply DuPont™ Granstar® herbicide within 2 months after lime application. Lime may be applied 14 days after Granstar® has been applied.
  • Withholding period: A withholding period for grazing is not required when used as directed. It is recommended however, that grazing or cultivation of treated areas be delayed 3 days as part of good agricultural practice.
For more information on Granstar® when used for conservation tillage please click here to contact us.
