Issue 26 / Autumn / April 2012

Hi #subname#

Welcome to the April edition of Specialty Seed's SeedData Newsletter.

I recently attended a Beef n Lamb field day in Huntley, this afternoon was well supported by the local sheep and beef farmers. The day was all about pasture renovation but within a short period of time the subject of pasture persistence arose. This is not surprising to me as it appears to be the number one issue concerning farmers today.

Unfortunately the solution to achieving pasture persistence has many twists and turns which include good pasture management, seed genetics, endophyte selection etc.

Over the next few editions of the Seedata newsletter we will talk about some of these issues.

In this edition:

"Your New Pasture - The first 12 months" is a step by step program to help guide you through the most important period of your new pastures life. From first up grazing, fertiliser applications and weed control this helpful guide covers most of the issues that you can control to achieve a dense, well tillered and productive pasture.

We realize that there is a lot more involved in establishing a successful pasture than simply purchasing top quality seed and introducing it into your paddock.

It will take 12 months of care and attention before a new pasture could be considered successfully established. Particular care with the grazing management for this 12 month period is one of the critical elements required if long term persistence is to be achieved. At the end of this period you should aim to have a dense, well tillered plant that has survived its first summer.
